Spam!

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

This post isn’t going to have much in the way of content—I just thought I’d warn you all now.

For my first several months of blogging, I was blissfully spam-free. Then all of a sudden the spammers discovered my blog; I became inundated with spam comments on old posts, so I turned on this nifty little spam filter plugin to take care of the problem. And take care of the problem it did! It stopped them entirely, and within a day or two of being blocked the spammers just gave up.

Or they mostly gave up, anyway. I’ve gotten only a few spam comments since then, but unfortunately the filter is just a little too good; it had decided that any comment containing a link must be spam, so it put them into the moderation queue for me to approve or delete.

Unfortunately, I’ve been horribly lazy when it comes to checking the moderation queue, so there were a couple of aging comments just sitting there in limbo. One of them was over a month old, and one of them ten days old. It’s a little late for me to respond to them on the posts themselves, because who reads old posts a month later to see if there are any new comments? So here we go.

Nemesis: Thanks for the grad school advice. I never would have seriously considered the UK for graduate school, and it still sounds problematic, but at least it’s something to think about. Of course, I would most likely be going for a PhD, not a master’s, so it might not be financially feasible after all. Also, your link isn’t working, so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be looking at.

Braden: That looks like a spiffy little piece of code. I’m not sure how I’d incorporate it into my current site navigation, since it’s vertical and not horizontal, but it might be fun to try to play around with it and see if I can make it do any neat tricks.

There. I feel so much better now that I’ve released those comments from purgatory.
