TV Is Dead. Long Live TV.
Back during the first couple years of our marriage, when cable was included in our rent, we watched quite a bit of TV. Oftentimes we had the TV on because we were bored and didn’t know what to do, even though we just ended up watching boring shows or channel surfing. Then we moved to an apartment that didn’t include cable, and we decided that it really wasn’t worth 50 bucks a month for something that wasted so much time.
We got ourselves down to a show or two a night, and we even got to the point where we had a hard time tolerating more than an hour of TV in one night. And as more and more shows have started to suck, we’ve whittled it down even further. Seriously, sometimes I wonder if TV executives have even heard of the phrase “jumping the shark.” We’re basically just down to Heroes and The Office, though occasionally we still watch House or My Name Is Earl. Otherwise it looks like network television is simply a barren wasteland of reality TV and bad sitcoms.
And on a related note, we decided to get rid of our TV. It started when we were talking about where we could move my art desk so that it’d actually be usable. One thing led to another, and I jokingly suggested that we could make room for things by getting a bigger monitor and a TV tuner for the computer and then getting rid of our entire entertainment center setup. Much to my surprise, Brinestone was so excited about the idea of getting rid of all that clutter that she actually agreed.
We got a TV tuner that doesn’t even require a computer—it connects straight to a monitor and speakers—and I have to say that I’m quite pleased.
Now I just have to figure out how to get Brinestone to approve my buying a new computer.

Too bad you’re not into LOST; it’s by far the best show on network TV. Reaper, on the CW, is also pretty good. But you have to go to cable (or Bittorrent) for the rest of the good stuff: The Wire, Battlestar Galactica, Psych, etc.

Lost sounded intriguing at first, but I’ve heard a lot of people say that it started to suck after the first couple of seasons. Maybe I’ll try watching it from the beginning sometime and see how I like it.
Oh, and we do watch Battlestar Galactica, but we have to resort to Bittorrent for that.

Since the writer’s strike, I haven’t been watching any tv… and I must say, it’s given me loads more time. Not that I’m ever not busy.
Ahhhhh, what I wouldn’t give to be not busy!
